The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Sunday withdrew its order of reducing internet’s uplink bandwidth by 75 per cent following
heavy criticism from internet users and stakeholders.
‘That was a temporary decision for securitising the voice termination through the internet. Now, the upload speed is back to normal,’ BTRC chairman Sunil Kanti Bose told reporters.
Earlier in the morning, ISP association leaders and other stakeholders met the BTRC chairman at his office and requested him to lift the order.
On Wednesday the BTRC asked the internet service providers to limit the upload speed within 25 per cent from previous 100 per cent as part of a move to curb illegal VoIP business.
The decision came into effect from Thursday and the internet users, especially the freelance outsourcers, criticised the move claiming that it would hamper their regular work.
The BTRC, however, had exempted banks, financial institutions, embassies, government offices and software firms from the order.
Commission officials said the average use of the uplink in the country was not more than 25 per cent and rest was used for transmitting illegal VoIP calls.
