Different aspects of women issues have been displayed through artworks at a nine-day art exhibition which is now going on at Dhaka Art Center in Dhanmondi in the city.
Organised by Shako, an association of women artists of Bangladesh, the group exhibition titled ‘Celebration’ marks the 100th years of International Woman’s Day. Various aspects of women issues such as women’s inner journey, their struggles and status in society are portrayed in the 26 artworks by 14 participants, nine from Shako and five guest artists including one Dutch artist.
Eminent artist Farida Zaman’s two acrylic paintings titled Remembrance-1 and 2 depict contradictory experiences in women’s life. Dominated by crimson colour, in one of her figurative paintings she portrayed an intimate scene of a male and a female while her another work, dominated by black colour, portrays a picture of a lonely woman.
Senior artist Naima Haque’s one painting titled ‘Nari O Muktijuddha’ symbolically presents the oppression and agony of women who were tortured in the concentration camp during the War of Independence in 1971 by the picture of caged birds surrounded by catapults.
Fareha Zeba’s ‘Shadow-5’, one of her two acrylic paintings at the exhibition, depicts woman body as the means of reproduction. Women’s suppressed emotions and hope are presented in a surrealist way on the canvas, which draws visitors’ attention.
With the inclusion of vibrant colours, Shulekha Chowdhury emphasises on the sufferings of Birangona (women victims in the war) in her two paintings titled Hariye Geche Sonar Meye-5 and 6.
The other participants at the exhibition are Nasreen Begum, Farzana Islam Milky, Kanak Chanpa Chakma, Kuhu, Joya Shahrin Huq, Maksuda Iqbal Nipa, Farzana Ahmed Santa, Rebeka Sultana Moly and Vadreshu Rita.
The exhibition will remain open from 3pm to 8pm till March 27.
