Two youths were killed as a pillar of an under-construction building
collapsed on them in the Sylhet city Tuesday evening.
The deceased were identified as Kamal Ahmed, 26, son of the late Abdul Jalil of village Telikona under Bishwanath upazila in Sylhet, and Akash, 22, son of Imam Ahmad of Tarail in Kishoreganj.
Local people said a pillar, along with a portion of a wall, collapsed on to the ground from the third floor of an under-construction building at Bharthakhola under Dakkhin Surma at around 7:30pm, leaving Kamal and Akash dead on the spot.
Kamal had come to buy a shallow tube well from a shop housed on the ground floor of the building owned by one Makhan Miah of Bhathkhola in the city.
Akash, a van puller, was also there at that moment when incident took place, police and local sources said.
Dakkhin Surma police station assistant commissioner Moniruzzaman, who visited the spot after the incident, blamed the building owner for not taking necessary safety measure before beginning the construction work of the roadside building.
Officer-in-charge Ahmed Nasir Uddin told New Age that the bodies were sent to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for postmortem examination.
He said no case was filed with in this connection till 2:30pm Wednesday.
