Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday said the government would consider the prospect of mobile computer laboratory on boats to introduce information and communication technology to the rural students.
\n“We have already started mobile computer laboratories in jeeps and microbuses which will\u00a0demonstrate different activities to the students across the country and are thinking of introducing the laboratories on boats to go to the students in remote areas,” the minister said.
\nHe was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of Bangladesh Online Community Conference at the Public Library auditorium in the city.
\nHe said the government will make computer education compulsory in the schools and will ensure that every child goes to the school by 2011.
\nThe minister said, “The world is moving forward very fast but we are lagging behind. We need to modernise our curriculum. The government has formulated the education policy keeping it in mind.”
\nHe alleged that a vested quarter is trying to create confusion regarding the education policy.
\n“Bangladesh is a poor country with limited resources, but this cannot be an excuse, we should take this as a challenge and advance in information and communication technology,” the minister said.
\nThe country needs to educate a large number of illiterate citizens before establishing a digital Bangladesh, he said.
\nBangladesh Computer Society president Mostafa Jabbar hailed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for being favourable to information and communication technology.
\n“She withdrew tax from all computer accessories in 1998 and since then it has remained so,” he said.
\nHe said, “Around six crore people in the country carries a mobile phone, we should use this trend in the enhancement of internet penetration.”
