Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Monday banned all kinds of gatherings, rallies and human chains in the capital till 12 midnight Tuesday. \u201cSeveral parties are scheduled to hold rallies and gatherings in Dhaka Metropolitan area Monday. If those gatherings and rallies are allowed to be held, incidents of clash and confrontation may erupt that could result in deterioration of law and order situation and could also disrupt city life,\u201d says a DMP press release.
\nIn light of the impending situation, all sorts of gatherings, rallies and human chains are hereby being banned till 12 midnight Tuesday, read the release signed by DMP Commissioner Benzir Ahmed.
\nThe DMP Commissioner also called upon all to help maintain peace, public safety and order in Dhaka Metropolitan area.
\nFollowing the imposition of a ban on all sorts of public gatherings in the capital, the ruling Awami League (AL) and the main opposition BNP shelved their Monday\u2019s scheduled rallies in the city.
\nBoth the parties on Sunday night announced to hold the rallies following the widespread violence over Hefajat-e-Islam\u2019s programme in the city.
\nFollowing the police ban, AL deputy office secretary Mrinal Kanti Das told reporters they have postponed the 14-party\u2019s rally at Bangabandhu Avenue as they have respect for law. \u201cAs Awami League is a democratic organisation, we have postponed the rally showing respect to the DMP decision.\u201d
\nAt a press briefing at AL president\u2019s Dhanmondi office, party presidium member Mohammed Nasim on Sunday night announced that the Awami League-led 14-party alliance will stage a rally at Bangabandhu avenue at 3pm on Monday in protest against the violence \u2018by Hefajat men\u2019.<\/p>\n
