Dhaka stocks declined on Wednesday after gains in straight four trading sessions as the BNP-led 18 party on the day called for a nationwide strike on Sunday that disheartened the investors.
\nThe key index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, shaded by 1.46 per cent,
\nto close at 3,715.93 points on the day.The DSEX had advanced by 254.14 points in the earlier four trading sessions after a bear-run in the previous three weeks.
\nThe turnover of the bourse declined to Tk 409.10 crore which was 3.46 per cent less than the earlier trading session\u2019s Tk 423.77 crore.
\nMarket operators said that investors had become confident about the capital market for last few days with the government decision to refinance in the capital market and a dialogue hope between the two main political parties, but the announcement of Sunday\u2019s strike by the BNP-led 18 party alliance dejected investors.
\nInvestors\u2019 participation on the trading floor declined on the day after the news of strike reached the stock market, they said.
\nThe alliance, however, withdrew the strike in the evening considering the effect of the cyclonic storm Mahasen which is likely to hit Bangladesh today (Thursday).
\nOn the other hand, poor financial report declaration by the listed companies including banks was a reason for the day\u2019s fall, they said.
\nSome other investors, however, said that profit taking might be another reason for the day\u2019s fall as the share prices increased in the last four trading sessions.
\nThe old key index of the bourse, DGEN, declined by 1.41 per cent, or 55.82 points, to finish at 3,901.23 points.
\nThe DGEN had increased by 252.71 points in the earlier four trading sessions.
\nDS30, the blue-chip index of the DSE, finished at 1,361.93 points, shedding 1.31 per cent, or 18.13 points on Wednesday.
\nThe DS30 in the earlier seven trading sessions had advanced by 97.32 points.
\nOf the 270 shares and mutual funds traded on the day, 74 advanced, 188 declined and 8 remained unchanged.
\nOrion Pharma led the turnover chart as its shares worth Tk 33.05 crore changed hands, while United Airways, Summit Purbanchol Power Company, Unique Hotel, Khulna Power Company and National Bank were among other turnover leaders of the day.<\/p>\n
