The ‘Mango, Silk and Gambhira Festival 2009’ ended on June 21 at Green Plaza, in Rajshahi City, according to a press release. The three-day festival was sponsored by Banglalink.
\nA.H.M Khairuzzaman Liton, Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation was the chief guest at the programme. Also present as special guests were Md. Nowsher Ali, police commissioner, Rajshahi; Alhaj Manzur Faruq Chowdhury, advisor, Bangladesh\u00a0Silk Industries Owners Organisation and Khandoker Saad Bin Mostafa, regional sales manager, Banglalink, Rajshahi.
\nRajshahi is famed for its mangoes and silk. Over 150 varieties of mangoes were on display at the festival. Every year, people of Rajshahi celebrate these two local assets as part of their culture and heritage with ‘Gambhira’ songs. ‘Gambhira’ is one of the most popular sub-genres among Bangladeshi folk songs. The festival begins with a rally in Rajshahi city, showcasing hundreds of varieties of mangoes as well as silk, followed by a ‘Gambhira’ performance.
