Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) yesterday blamed government ‘failure’ to ensure law and order as the main reason behind last three days’ incidents in Ashulia-Savar industrial belt near the capital, resulting in damage worth around Tk 300crore.
\nLeaders of the BGMEA refused to recognise the incidents as ‘labour unrest’. They claimed that these were instigated by ‘outsiders’ involved in creating troubles in the sector at different times.They however did not specify the\u00a0outsiders.
\nThe BGMEA leaders demanded a transparent probe into such incidents one after another in the last few years.
\nThey met the labour minister and commerce minister yesterday and sought proper security for garment industry.
\nAnd they will seek to meet the prime minister today.
\n“The incidents (in Ashulia-Savar) in last three days occurred even in presence of law enforces,” BGMEA President Abdus Salam Murshedy said at a press briefing at BGMEA building in the capital.
\n“The government is fully responsible for ensuring law and order in any industrial area. But as per our observation, it completely failed to do so,” he said.
\nA total of 150 garment factories were damaged and three were burned in the incidents, claimed BGMEA.<\/p>\n
