\nSC dismisses ACC plea for appeal against HC stay order<\/strong>
\nThe Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) plea for leave to appeal against the High Court orders concerning the quashing of Niko scam case against former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
\nOn July 9 last year, the High Court upon a quashing petition stayed the proceedings of the Niko graft case and issued a rule upon the\u00a0ACC to explain why the case filed by the watchdog body “should not be quashed”.
\nOn December 9, 2007, during the past military-backed caretaker government, the ACC filed two separate cases with Tejgaon police station against Khaleda Zia and another ex-PM, Sheikh Hasina, now Prime Minister, for alleged corruption in signing contracts with the Canadian oil company, Niko.
\nThe alleged corruption reportedly caused a total loss of Tk 23,650.50 crore to the state exchequer.
\nOf the staggering figure, Khaleda has been accused of causing a loss of Tk 10,000 crore.
\nBarrister Rafique-ul Huq appeared for Khaldea Zia while advocate Abdul Aziz Khan for the ACC.<\/p>\n
