11 more lives lost

The blockade programme, called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, claimed eleven more lives, while more than 50 people were injured in clashes between
blockaders, AL activists and law enforcers across the country on Tuesday. Our Chittagong staff reporter said that a covered van lost its control and hit a roadside
tree when opposition activists hurled a petrol bomb at Saltgola area under EPZ police station early Tuesday. The driver of the van, Mahbub (30), was killed on the
spot, while two others, Suman Kumar Das (28) and Mizan (20), sustained burn injuries. Mizan later died at CMCH at around 7:30 pm.
A CNG-auto rickshaw driver was killed by brick-bats hurled by picketers in Rangunia upazila in the early hours. The OC?of Rangunia confirmed the news.
In Sitakunda, a local leader of Swecchasebak Dal was shot dead in a gunfight between the police and 18-party picketers at Mandaritola area around 3:30am. Five others
also sustained bullet injuries. The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam Rasel (22).
In Shatkhira, two Shibir activists were shot dead and five people received bullet injuries as blockade supporters clashed with the police and BGB members in Debhata
upazila in the morning. The deceased were identified as Hossain Ali (19) and Arizul Islam (13).
A Juba League worker was beaten to death by the blockaders at the Mahmudpur area of Satkhira-Bhomra highway at around 5:30pm in Satkhira.
The deceased was identified as Giasudddin, 30, of Itagacha Maniktola area. He was the Juba League member of Itagacha Ward-7.
Our correspondent from Chandpur reports that two youths were killed in police firing and six others, including a policeman, were injured in a clash that took place
between blockaders and the police at Kali Bari area in the district town around 10am. The deceased were identified as Siyam Mostan (14), a class VIII student of Al
Amin Academy, and Ratan Mia (22), a masters student of Chandpur Government University College.
In protest, the opposition alliance called a daylong hartal for Wednesday.
Our Noakhali correspondent reports that a BNP supporter was killed when the police chased a group of picketers during a clash at Duttarhat in Maijdee town around
12:30pm. The deceased was indentified as Abdus Salam (61).
A former madrasa teacher succumbed to burn injuries on Tuesday morning at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 10am. The deceased was identified as Mawlana Abdus
Sattar (65). Sattar received burn injuries when some blockaders had hurled petrol bombs at a human hauler in Patuakhali Sadar on November 30.
In the capital, the fourth day of blockade was marked by incidents of violence that left at least four people injured.
Blockaders blasted three crude bombs at Gabtali around 6:30am and at Khilgaon at about 6:45am. Shibir activists brought out processions in front of New Market and at
Hazipara in Rampura in the morning.
Law enforcers detained two people from Jatrabari, according to witnesses. They fired around 20 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse a group of blockaders. The
blockaders exploded at least 10 bombs at Jatrabari intersection.
Some opposition supporters exploded at least two crude bombs at J-block of Baridhara area in the capital around 1pm.
Our Gazipur correspondent reports that some unidentified miscreants set the Kapasia upazila AL office on fire in the wee hours of Tuesday. Furniture and necessary
documents, including the photos of Sheikh Hasina and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, were burnt to ashes.
Our Dinajpur correspondent reports that Md Saidul Islam (40), a police constable, received critical injuries after being hit by brickbats thrown at him by some
blockaders.
In Chittagong, Minnan Hossain Belal, a seven-year-old child, sustained critical splinter injuries at Saraipara area under Pahartali police station in the city around
11 am.
Blockaders removed a stretch of railway tracks at Barotakia in Mirsarai upazila. In Laxmipur, BNP-Jamaat activists blocked Mandari and Dalal Bazar Roads on the
Laxmipur-Dhaka highway in the morning. Several crude bombs exploded in the district town as pro-blockade activists brought out processions in support of the blockade.
In Rajshahi, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered eight bombs from Lalithar Komlapur area on Monday midnight.
In Bhola, a group of blockaders and the police locked in a clash, leaving at least 10 people injured. Two people were picked up from the spot. The local BNP unit
called a half-day hartal on Wednesday, in protest of police attack on its leaders and activists.
In Jhenidah, police detained at least five BNP supporters.
Incidents of violence were also reported from districts, including Joypurhat, Cox’s Bazar, Barisal, Bogra, Meherpur and Manikganj.
