Disney’s live action remake of “The Little Mermaid” brought in $117.5 million domestically over the four-day weekend, representing the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend opening all-time, according to Comscore.

The movie’s debut fell in line with expectations. For the three-day weekend, The Little Mermaid earned $95.5 million domestically, which is roughly the same amount Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin earned when it debuted over Memorial Day weekend in 2019.

Taylor Hawkins’ son Shane once again honoured his late father as Foo Fighters embark on their summer tour.

On Friday, the 17-year-old joined the band onstage to perform their 1995 hit I’ll Stick Around during the band’s headlining performance at the Boston Calling music festival.

Midway through the 20-song set, Foo Fighters welcomed Violet Grohl to sit in on “Shame Shame”, which included a snippet of Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”, and “Rope”. Dave Grohl then dedicated a heartfelt solo rendition of “Cold Day in the Sun” to Taylor’s family and Taylor before introducing Shane Hawkins. The young Hawkins sat in on drums during “I’ll Stick Around”.

Music Director Shams Ahmed has become the first Bangladeshi-American to win an Emmy award for Music direction for a Super Bowl LVII piece, “Ragged old flag”, at the 44th Sport Emmys. Shams Ahmed announced the news on his Facebook along with his Emmy award.

5 Bangladeshi films going to London’s Rainbow Film Festival

The 24th edition of the Rainbow International Film Festival is going to kick off in London, UK, on May 28 at the Genesis Cinema on Mile End Road, East London. The festival has been organised by the Rainbow Society.

The fifth song from Coke Studio Bangla’s second season, “Deora,” debuted on May 7 and has since taken over YouTube. Surprisingly, the song racked up over 21 million views in just 11 days, breaking a record on the platform.

The song “Bhaber Pagal” by Nigar Sumi and Jalali Set previously had the most views in Coke Studio Bangla, with 24 million.

This song was released a year ago while “Deora” received its astounding 21 million views in just 11 days. Not just for Coke Studio Bangla but for any Bengali song, such a quick surge to stardom is a rarity.

Shilpakala stages ‘Hamlet’

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy staged its acclaimed production titled Hamlet at the National Theatre Hall of the academy on Friday.

The play, written by William Shakespeare, has been translated into Bangla by Syed Shamsul Haq.

Thespian Ataur Rahman has directed the production.

Set in Denmark, Hamlet depicts Prince Hamlet and his attempts to exact revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who murders Hamlet’s father in order to seize the throne.

Popular actor, freedom fighter Farooque no more

Legendary Bangladeshi film actor, freedom fighter and ruling Awami League lawmaker for Dhaka-17 Akbar Hossain Pathan (Farooque) passed away while undergoing treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Monday. He was 74.

The actor died at about 10:00am Singapore local time.

Farooque dominated the silver screen during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s. He was born on August 18, 1948 in Dhaka.

Renowned Indian author Samaresh Majumdar died in a hospital in Kolkata of Indian state of West Bengal on Monday late afternoon, reports Anandabazar Patrika Online.

The report said that the author died at about 5:45pm on Monday. He was 81.

Samaresh was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for more than a decade.
