12-day int’l math workshop at DU concludes

The 12-day-long international mathematics workshop titled ‘scientific research school on mathematical epidemiology/biology’ ended Friday afternoon, with the concluding ceremony held at the AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban on the Dhaka University campus.
The workshop, which began on May 9, was jointly organised by the mathematics department of Dhaka University and the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics, also known as CIMPA, a non-profit organisation funded by France, Switzerland, Spain and Norway.
The workshop was attended by 50 local and foreign researchers under the supervision of seven international mathematicians from USA, Canada, France, Spain and Italy.
The concluding ceremony was presided over by DU vice-chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman and deputy education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury was present as the chief guest.
Spanish ambassador Francisco de Asís Benítez Salas, DU science faculty dean Professor Md Abdus Samad, AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation trustee Parveen Hasan and Universidad Complutense de Madrid professor Alicja Barbara Kubik were present as special guests on the occasion.
Mathematics department chair Professor Md Shahidul Islam and mathematics professor Chandranath Poddar delivered the vote of thanks at the closing ceremony.
Akhtaruzzaman said that the present world was facing various problems, including the Covid pandemic and climate change. He sincerely thanked the mathematics department and the CIMPA for organising the workshop.
‘The workshop would play an important role in shaping various decisions of the government and policy makers in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic,’ he added.
Deputy education minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury said, ‘Mathematics is involved in all aspects of our lives.’ He thanked the organisers for the workshop, adding that this kind of arrangement builds bridges between researchers and different parts of the state.
At the closing of the ceremony, around 50 certificates were distributed among the 50 participants from different universities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Philippines, Tunisia and Ghana.
Professor Chandranath Podder of the DU mathematics department and Professor Jorge Mozo Fernández from Spain were the coordinators of the workshop.
