The Bangladesh Olympic Association on Friday decided to move the South Asian Games-bound athletes from the National Sports Council hostel to a hotel due to the unhygienic condition, said an official.
About 70 athletes from three disciplines – kabaddi, cycling and handball – are currently staying at the NSC hostel to prepare themselves for the SA Games, scheduled from January 20-30 in the Indian cities Shillong and Guwahati.
BOA president Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, also the former army chief, visited the hostel on Thursday along with other officials and found the condition unlivable, according to BOA deputy secretary general Ashikur Rahman Miku.
‘The condition in the hostel is not suitable for athletes,’ said Miku, a Narail-based organiser, who himself lives in the hostel.
‘We have decided to move them to a hotel near the Bangabandhu National Stadium to give them a better living condition.’
Miku, however, said that the condition of the Mirpur Krira Palli, another NSC-run accommodation, is much better but they can only accommodate few athletes there.
A total of 564 athletes from 17 disciplines are training for the South Asian Games since August 1.
