The 15th convocation of Independent University, Bangladesh was held on Saturday at the Army Stadium in Dhaka. Delegated by the President, IUB vice-chancellor Omar Rahman conferred degrees on the graduating students. Former chief adviser to the caretaker government Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman attended the programme as the convocation speaker.
The convocation began with paying homage to South Africa’s anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. One-minute silence was also observed in honour of Mandela.
From various programs of the university, a record number of 1,955 students attended the convocation. Of them, 1,246 were undergraduates and 709 graduates.
A total of 182 students — 179 undergraduates and three graduates — had earned academic honour. Five of them — two undergraduates and three graduates — had received Chancellor’s Award (Gold Medal) for securing CGPA 4 out of 4.
Chairman of the Board of Trustee Rashed Chowdhury and chairman of the IUB founding Trust Saifur Rahman also spoke on the occasion. Tanvir A Khan, registrar of the university, delivered a formal vote of thanks.
