Sixteen Bangladeshi workers detained in an ongoing crackdown on illegal expatriates in Saudi Arabia have been freed, said Bangladesh Ambassador to the Kingdom Shahidul Islam yesterday.
“We have records of a total of 20 workers who were detained by police. Among them, 16 have been freed as their employers showed the workers’ legal work permits (Iqama) to police,” he told The Daily Star over phone.
Saudi Arabia began the crackdown against illegal foreign workers after a seven-month general amnesty ended on Sunday.
Replying to a query about the duration of the crackdown, the Bangladesh ambassador said it depends on the Saudi government.
