One hundred and eighty-six students were expelled for cheating on the first day of the primary and ibtedayi terminal examinations on Tuesday, said the personnel of the control room of the Directorate of Primary Education.
They said that 174 were expelled from the primary and 12 from the ibtedayi terminal examinations.
About 2,63,026 students were absent on the first day, of whom 1,98,167 were absent in the primary and 64,859 in the ibtedayi terminal examinations.
This year some 24,88,138 students registered for taking the examinations in 6,000 centres across the country.
Of the total of 24,88,148 students, 21,57,015 are from schools and 3,31,133 from madrassahs. The examination is considered to be the biggest in the country because of the huge number of students.
The primary and mass education minister, Afsarul Ameen, visited the centre in Mohammadpur Girls High School.
He claimed that the authorities had ensured a transparent system for checking the exam scripts.
The teachers have to check the scripts at a particular place in the upazila headquarters. If they cannot complete their work in a single day, they have to finish checking the scripts the next day.
But the teachers cannot take the scripts home. Many teachers have expressed their dissatisfaction over the system.
‘Such a system will help us to ensure transparency in the process of checking the scripts,’ the minister told journalists after visiting the centre.
Guardians in some parts of the city said that there was mismanagement in some exam centres. In the centre in Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, many students were injured due to overcrowding when entering the centre.
The primary terminal examinations will end on Nov 29. The results will be published from December 21 to 27.

About 5,963 students were absent in Bogra on the first day of the primary terminal examinations, according to the district primary education office.
A total of 58,853 students have registered for taking the exam in 134 examination centres.
Our correspondent in Nilphamari said that 2,843 students were absent out of the total 33,000 on the first day of the primary terminal examination.
Our correspondent in Jaipurhat said that 71 were identified as fake students at the centre in Jaipurhat RB Govt High School.
Jaipurhat’s deputy commissioner, Ashok Kumar Biswas, told journalists that 3,359 students from 161 Ananda schools, which are meant for drop-outs, had registered for taking the examination.
According to sources, those schools do not have that many students but had registered students from senior classes to increase the number in order to get more funds.
Setu, identified as a fake student, told new Age that she was actually a student of Class X in Masterpara Girls High School. ‘Teachers from Rupnagar Ananda School asked me to take the exam as a student of Class V,’ she told New Age.
