A Sylhet court on Monday sent 19 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e Islami and its student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir to jail after rejecting a bail prayer in two cases.
The cases were filed in connection with the attack at the Palli Bidyut office and clash with police at Bishwanath upazila in the district on Mach 20 that left one person killed.
As par the prosecution statement, a group of Jamaat-Shibir activists moved towards the upazila headquarters from a nearby village Karikona and tried to vandalise the Rural Electrification office during a dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced in the division on March 20 in demand of release of Sylhet city Jamaat Amir Ehsanul Mahbub Jubair.
Bishwanath police subinspector Zia Uddin filed two cases under the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act against 38 local leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir and 180 unnamed activists the same day on charge of trying to attack REO and assaulting the lawmen and putting resistance in discharging duty to contain law and order situation, sources in the court said.
Assistant public prosecutor in Sylhet Mahfuzur Rahman told New Age that 19 out of 38 named accused in the two cases appeared in the chief judicial magistrate court after submitting a bail petition at the noon.
‘But, the additional chief judicial magistrate, Abul Kashem, rejected the bail prayer and asked them to be sent in jail,’ he added.
