The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined two more factories Tk 13.36 lakh for environment pollution in Rupganj of Narayanganj under ‘Operation Prevent Environment Crime’.
A team of DoE led by Director (Enforcement) Munir Chowdhury penalised Bikrampur Steel Ltd Tk 5.68 lakh for not using fume extraction units and releasing toxic fumes, a press release said.
Munir said the fumes, containing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, are causing serious health hazards to the factory workers, pedestrians, and local residents.
DoE directed the owner of the factory to use fume extraction units, he added.
In a separate drive, the team fined B Brothers Dyeing Factory in the same area Tk 7.68 lakh for discharging untreated liquid waste in the Shitalakhya River.
Despite several DoE notices sent over the last three years, the factory did not bother to set up effluent treatment plants, said Munir.
The authorities of the two factories were summoned to the DoE headquarters where they were given strict directions to stop pollution, he added.
