At least 20 people were injured by harpoons early Thursday in a clash between two groups of villagers in Narsingdi Sadar upazila centering Union Parishad election.
Police said the clash ensued at about 5:00am when the rival groups of remote Anantarampur village in Chardighaldi Union Parishad as a sequel to a dispute took place over a candidacy of chairman post.
The rivalry began between Farhad and Newaz as both of them wanted to contest the upcoming Union Parishad election for the post of chairman, reports our Narsingdi correspondent.
Anowar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Model Police Station, said the supporters of Farhad equipped with harpoons attacked and vandalised the houses of the people of Newaz Ali, a member of Chardighaldi union.
Newaz’s people resisted their rivals with harpoons, erupting a clash that left 20 people injured, the OC said.
Three of the injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while nine admitted to Narsingdi 100-bed Hospital.
Additional police personnel have been deployed to avert any untoward situation.
