Twenty more students of Khulna University’s life science school have fallen sick after 108 students began their fast-unto-death on Sunday demanding withdrawal of work stoppage programme by a group of teachers and holding of term final examinations immediately.
With these, the total number of students who fell sick for fasting stood at 30 till Tuesday afternoon.
Two of them were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital while another is undergoing treatment at Raeesa Clinic of Gallamari under Sadar thana as their condition deteriorated since early this morning.
The two taking treatment at KMCH are Abu Saeed and DK Mukhargee alias Babu and the other undergoing treatment at Raseesa clinic is Tapoti Mandol.
Meanwhile, Imran Hossain, a final year student of fisheries and marine resources discipline, who is leading the ongoing movement, said they would not withdraw from fast-unto-death programme till their demands were not fulfilled.
The term final examinations scheduled to begin last June 23 were postponed as a group of teachers have been boycotting all academic activities in protest against the appointment of Professor Samir Kumar Shadhu as dean of life science school.
Professor Rezaul Karim, who is leading the agitation of teachers, termed the appointment of the dean illegal blaming the vice-chancellor for violating seniority rules.
But the vice-chancellor, Professor Fayekuzzaman, claimed that he did not violate seniority rules in appointing the dean.
When contacted, the VC told New Age that a group of teachers were involved in conspiracy to vitiate academic atmosphere of the university.
