Bangladesh Telecommu-nication Regulatory Commi-ssion (BTRC) with the help of law enforces yesterday seized 2,000 illegal SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards of mobile phones at a stall in Dhaka International Trade Fair.
In a statement the BTRC said an unlicensed call centre named “Awal Call Centre” distributed leaflets among visitors to sell World SIM, an unauthorised roaming SIM.
The BTRC said such brands of SIM cards are not recognised in Bangladesh and they are mainly used for generating international calls through VoIP (voice over internet protocol).
The commission also said they seized the SIM cards when people of the call centre were selling them to visitors at the fair.
The BTRC filed a case against three officials of Awal Call Centre with Adabar Police Station. The commission also seized some documents in this connection at a house in Adabar area, says a press release.
BTRC Chairman Manzurul Alam said, “BTRC will take action against any illegal activities in the telecom sector,” according to the statement.
