As many as 25 Bangladesh missions abroad have failed to achieve their respective export targets for the July-April period of the current financial year mostly
because of the economic meltdown in the USA and in Europe.
Of the 44 Bangladesh missions abroad, 19 met their export targets for the first 10 month of the current fiscal, according to the Export Promotion Bureau data.
The 19 successful missions are The Hague, Stockholm, Ankara, New Delhi, Canberra, Hong Kong, Dubai, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Jakarta, Muscat, Bangkok, Riyadh, Manila, Kuwait, Yangon, Tashkent and Manama.
Although 25 Missions could not achieve their 10-month export target, export growth of 12 among them — Tokyo, Madrid, Rome, Ottawa, Beijing, Paris, Washington, London, Berlin, Seoul, Doha and Kathmandu — was higher than that of the corresponding period of the previous year.
But the export growth of the rest 13 missions — Tehran, Rabat, Brussels, Singapore, Islamabad, Colombo, Hanoi, Nairobi, Brunei, Pretoria, Amman, Tripoli and Thimpu — was lower than that of the corresponding period of the previous financial year, showed the data.
According to the EPB, out of the 16 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only six achieved the export target while 10 failed to make the cut.
The six are New Delhi, Canberra, Dubai, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur and Yangon.
The export earnings for the July-April period of the current financial year totalled $21.78 billion with 10.14 per cent growth against the strategic target of $22.52 billion over the corresponding period of the last financial year.
The 19 Bangladesh missions that succeeded in achieving their targets for the July-April period of current fiscal accounted for $4.33 billion with an 8.48 per cent growth while the export earnings of the remaining 25 missions, which failed to achieve the targets, totalled $16.78 billion with a 6.49 per cent negative growth.
The highest earning over the 10-month period, some $4.67 billion — almost one-fifth of total exports — was registered by the Washington mission, followed by Berlin, which accounted for $3.41billion, and London, $2.44 billion.
The Bangladesh mission in Paris earned $1.22 billion, Madrid fetched $1.04 billion, Rome $935.77 million, The Hague $ 913.02 million and Ottawa $897.98 million during the July-April period of the current financial year.
