Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said as many as 2.93 lakh cases are pending with the High Court (HC) and number of such cases is much higher at lower courts causing untold sufferings to litigants.
The government is considering reintroducing the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system by amending Civil Procedure Code (CPC) for quick disposal of pending cases, he said.
While talking to reporters at his secretariat office yesterday afternoon Shafique Ahmed said judges and lawyers concerned would be provided trainings for running the ADR system smoothly.
Once the ADR is in vogue lawyers can mediate the disputes between parties outside of the courts and it will save both time and money of litigants, he said.
The law minister said he had already discussed the issue with the Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin for reintroducing the ADR and the Chief Justice also expressed his interest in this regard.
The cases are being disposed of through the ADR in many developed countries in the world, he added.
Law minister said litigants of our country are being deprived of getting justice and psychologically being affected due to the delay in disposing of their cases at the courts.
He informed some donor agencies including UNDP and CIDA have already offered his ministry to provide necessary assistances for restarting the ADR.
When asked about the introduction of the ADR system during the BNP-led four- party alliance government, the minister said though the ADR had been launched earlier it was not effective.
The present government will bring back the system so that it is implemented effectively, he added.
