The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested three members of a carjacking gang and seized at least nine different types of private cars from different places in separate raids in the city.
DMP joint commissioner Munirul Islam disclosed this to journalists at a press briefing at DMP’s media center on Minto Road at Sunday.The arrestees are Ismail Hossain, 37, owner of Royal Auto Care and Servicing Centre, Hanif Mridha, 32, and Imran Imdad Imu, 41.
A carjacking gang, led by Ismail, had long been stealing cars around the city. The gang with the assistance of some dishonest officials of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority made duplicates papers for the stolen cars and then sold them at the real market price.
A DMP vehicle theft prevention and recovery team arrested Imran on June 5 and recovered five cars from Uttara and Khilkhet after police got information from Ismail and Hanif.
Police arrested Ismail and Hanif from Royal Auto Care and Servicing Centre at Khilkhet and seized four cars.
BD nabbed the duo after a client of the centre filed a case with the Kafrul police station on May 28, accusing the service centre owner of stealing car.
Seven of the recovered cars were handed over to the owners.
The gang has at least 25 members, DB is conducting raids to nab the other members, said Monirul.
DMP DB deputy commissioner (south) Sheikh Nazmul Alam, DC (media) Masudur Rahman and additional DC Shahidullah, among others, were present at the brief.
