Mohakal Theatre Fest
3 more Tagore plays to be staged today
Two local and an Indian troupe will stage three plays featuring stories of the Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore today, on the sixth day of the ongoing Festival of World Theatre, arranged by Mohakal Natya Sampradaya.
The festival has already featured three Tagore plays earlier on Saturday. The Indian theatre troupe Prangon will stage Kadambini at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; local troupe Swapnadal will stage Chitrangada at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the academy and Sanglap Group Theatre will stage Badnam at the auditorium of Chhayanaut, Dhanmondi, in the capital.
Kadambini is an adaptation of Tagore’s short story of the same title. Directed and adapted by Abhoy Sinha, the play – acted in Hindi language – reveals the story of woman who becomes the victim of the heinous Hindu ritual Soti Daho Protha, where the widow is burnt alive in her dead husband’s cremation.
Swapnadal will stage the lyrical drama version of Chitrangada written by Tagore in 1892. Directed by Zahid Repon, the play highlights the inner beauty of soul over the physical beauty through the legendary affair of Arjun and the Manipuri princess named Chitrangada as mentioned in the epic Mahabharat.
Sanglap Group Theatre’s Badnam is an adaptation of another Tagore’s short story with the same title. Directed and adapted by Mostafa Hira, the play depicts the story of a common Bengali house wife who eventually transforms into a rebel fighting against the unjust rule of the British colonisers.
