Around three lakh new taxpayers would be enlisted in the next fiscal year,
hoped finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith.
‘The number of taxpayers was 6.45 lakh actually in 2007-2008; this will surpass 11.64 lakh in 2012-2013 and yet, I stick 90 to the target of 30 lakh new taxpayers and that of 50 lakh TIN registrations,’ he said.
Muhith made the announcement while placing the budget for the next financial year before the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.
Muhith said that the government had undertaken the drive to broadening the tax net by registering new taxpayers and enhance the scope of revenue thereby.
‘Two programmes are underway to this end.’ Mentioning that fake TIN identification process is almost nearing an end and will be completed next year, he said: ‘As a result of TIN cleansing, the number of TIN has come down to 20 lakh from 37 lakh.’
The finance minister also mentioned that intensive tax survey programme will continue. ‘We will, thereby, be able to enlist about 3 lakh new taxpayers this year,’ he said adding that survey teams had been formed under the head of zonal commissioners for making the programme successful.
