Bangladesh Railway (East zone) evicted 32 foothill shanties yesterday at Batali Hill in the city, where 17 people died in a landslide on July 1.
Divisional Estate Officer of BR, Rashid Ahmed led the 3-hour drive at Ambagan under Khulshi Police Station, reports our correspondent.
The BR authorities assisted by Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), evacuated at least 32 families and recovered around 25 decimals of land, Rashid said.
However, around 70 families still living on the slopes of Batali Hill and its adjacent Mati Jharna Hill could not be evacuated due to an injunction ordered by the court, Rashid said.
On July 1, a landslide killed 17 people at the foothills of Batali Hill as a wall collapsed over the shanties.
Following the accident, a five-member probe committee was formed by the district administration which charted out a nine-point recommendation including evacuation.
The committee led by Md. Ehsan E Elahi, additional deputy commissioner (general) of Chittagong, urged all government organisations and individuals who owned hills in the city to immediately evacuate people residing on the slopes.
He also suggested enclosing the foothills by planting trees and barbed wire fences.
