A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for four policemen charged with beating to death a businessman of Savar in the early hours of Thursday. Inspector Aminur Rahman of Savar Model Police Station, also the investigation officer of the murder case filed against the four cops produced them before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Dhaka on Friday seeking a seven-day remand but the court granted five days for interrogation. The four policemen who have been charged with the murder case of the businessman are Sub-Inspector Emadul Haque of Ashulia Police Station and constables Modased, Ramzan and Yousuf of Savar Model Police Station.
A team of undercover police consisting of Sub Inspectors Mustafizur Rahman and Sazzad Rumon, and Assistant Sub Inspectors Akidul Islam and Ershad Ukil, picked up businessman Shamim Sarkar and his nephew Saiful Islam at around 10:00pm Wednesday near their homes at Hemayetpur in Savar, family sources said.
Sajjad Sarkar, an elder brother of the victim claimed soon after they picked up Shamim and Saiful, they demanded Tk 2.5 lakh for the businessman’s release. As we denied them the money, they tortured Shamim to death and took his body to Sir Sallimullah Medical Collage Hospital in an unconscious state and fled the scene.
Aminur Sarkar, another elder bother of the victim filed a murder case with Savar Police Station against SI Emadul Haque of Ashulia Police Station, SI Aqidul Islam and three constables — Modassed, Raamzan and Yousuf of Savar Model Police Station.
Two separate committees were formed to investigate the incident, he said.
A three-member committee headed by Assistant Police Superintendent Faruk Hossain has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
Another committee formed with Additional Deputy Inspector General Mizanur Rahman, Dhaka Range Additional Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman and Assistant Police Superintendent of Savar Zone Sheikh Rasel, has been asked to submit its report by seven working days.
