40 killed in road crashes during Eid holiday

At least 40 people were killed and many more injured in separate road accidents at different places of the country, including the capital, in three days  from Friday. Of them, 19 were killed on Sunday while 17 on Saturday and four on Friday.
Apart from the capital, the accidents were reported from Bogra, Dinajpur, Comilla, Jamalpur, Brahmanbaria, Natore, Noakhali, Gaibandha, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Magura, Manikganj, Joypurhat, Faridpur and Tangail districts.
In Bogra, five people, including a woman and her daughter, were killed and 30 others injured as a bus and a truck collided at Banani in Shahjahanpur upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Police and witnesses said the Dhaka-bound air-conditioned bus of ‘SR Paribahan’ from Rangpur collided head-on with the truck on Bypass Road-1 around 3 pm, killing the five on the spot and injuring others.
In Dinajpur, five people, including a woman and her minor daughter, were killed and 48 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Birganj upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses said a Panchagarh-bound bus from Dinajpur collided head-on with another bus coming from the opposite direction at Badiapara around 3pm after its driver lost control over the steering following deflation of a front tyre, killing three on the spot and injuring 50 others.
Two of the injured died at hospital.
In Comilla, three people, including two women, were killed and three others injured in two road accidents in Chouddagram and Daudkandi upazilas on Sunday morning.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Highway Police Station, said two unidentified women were killed and three people were injured when Dhaka-bound ‘Al-Arafah’ bus from Noakhali hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway near Daudkani Toll Plaza at about 11 am.
In another accident, a human-hauler driver was killed when a bus ran over him on the highway at Miabazar in Chouddagram upazila at about 8:30 am.
In another accident in the district on Friday, two people were killed and eight others injured as a microbus they were travelling in overturned at Minsar in Burichang upazila.
In Jamalpur, two people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch in Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the bus fell into the ditch at Barovita on Jamalpur-Tangail highway around 4:30pm as its driver lost control over the steering, killing the duo on the spot and injuring others.
In Brahmanbaria, two people were killed and three others injured as a truck crashed into a CNG-run three-wheeler at Kuttapara intersection in Sarail upazila on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the sand-laden truck ran into the auto-rickshaw around 4 pm. The two people died on the spot.
In Natore, an unidentified motorcyclist was killed when a microbus drove into his bike at Sherkal in Singra upazila on Sunday noon.
In Noakhali, a private car passenger was killed and two others were injured when the vehicle overturned in Begumganj upazila around 2am.
In Gaibandha, eight people were killed and 29 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Gobindaganj upazila on Saturday afternoon.
Police said the Rangpur-bound bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ from Bogra collided head-on with the Bogra-bound bus from Nakhaihat in Gobindaganj carrying members of a bridal party at Goalia around 5:15pm, killing three people on the spot and injuring 34 others.
In Madaripur, three motorcyclists were killed as a bus crashed into their bike in Rajoir upazila on Saturday afternoon.
Police and witnesses said the Barisal-bound bus of ‘Surjamukhi Paribahan’ from Faridpur ran into the motorbike of the trio at Kalibari on Dhaka-Barisal highway around 5:30pm while they were going to Tekerhat from the district town.
In Gopalganj, a Bangladesh Navy man was killed and 10 people were injured when a microbus plunged into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Gorakhola in Muksudpur upazila on Saturday noon.
Witnesses said the microbus fell into the ditch breaking the railing of a bridge as its driver lost control over the steering, killing Khorshed on the spot and injuring 10 people.
In Magura, a woman was killed as a truck smashed her head when she put the head outside a bus on Magura-Kamarkhali road at Wapda crossing in Kamarkhali upazila on Saturday noon.
In another accident, a schoolgirl was killed at Shatrujitpur on Magura-Narail highway in Sadar upazila.
In Manikganj, a man was killed and 15 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on Dhaka-Aricha highway at Tepra on Saturday afternoon.
In Tangail, two siblings were killed in a road accident on the Gorai-Sakhipur road in Panchgaon area in Mirzapur upazila on Saturday.
Police said a Sakhipur-bound ‘Bhotbhoti’ (shallow engine-run human hauler) from Gorai bus stand was knocked down by a bus in the area around 4pm, injuring seven passengers of the human hauler. The injured siblings succumbed to their injuries later.
In the capital, two middle-aged men were killed in separate road accidents in Elephant Road and Mirpur areas early Friday.
