The police arrested 28 workers of Hachong Sweater Factory in Hijal Hati area under Kaliakoir upazila of the district on Thursday and Friday on charge of ransacking the factory.
Police and factory sources said the workers of the factory on Thursday staged a demonstration in demand of production bonus as per the old pay scale. At one stage in the night they damaged a number of window panes, computers, furniture, and machines of the factory. The angry readymade garment workers also assaulted some officials of the factory.
On information, a team of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police also arrested four workers on the spot.
Nazmul Alam, general manager of the factory, on Thursday night filed a case with Kaliakoir police station against around 400 workers, naming 92 of them, for ransacking the factory. He also claimed that the agitating workers had badly damaged factory property worth about Tk 1.5 crore.
