Special BCS sought to save the situation
Education in the 251 government colleges of the country suffers a setback for severe teacher shortages with some 4000 posts lying vacant, prompting demands for holding a special BCS examination to overcome the crisis.
According to sources, the situation is so desperate that many departments of 88 colleges are left without any teacher presently.
Working teachers blamed non-implementation of law for the acute shortage of teachers as the government colleges of the country are working with just half the required number of teachers.
According to the rule, a college should have at least 1 teacher against 45 students whereas many colleges have 100 to 150 teachers for as many as 15000 to 45000 students.
Sources informed that reluctance of a section of teachers to work at the colleges in remote areas is also a reason for such a severe teacher crisis.
At Chandpur Government College the situation came to such a pass that there is a lone teacher in Chemistry and Islamic Studies department each while English department runs with three.
When contacted, Mihir Lal Shaha, principal of Chandpur Government College, informed that his college has only 62 teachers whereas it is supposed to have at least 85 for around 10,000 students.
“Creation of posts and recruitment through special BCS can solve the existing teacher crisis,” he said.
Laxmipur Government College is also facing severe shortage of teachers as the college has 43 teachers for around 6,000 students whereas it should have at least 68 teachers.
Principal of the college Mahbubul Haque told daily sun that his college faces severe teacher shortages in almost every department.
“English, Physics and Chemistry departments of the college are facing acute teacher shortages. I think there is no alternative to recruiting sufficient number of teachers through a special BCS,” he said.
The scenario in some other government colleges of the country is even worse.
When contacted, Dhaka Board’s chairman and president of the BCS Teachers Association Professor Fahima Khatun told daily sun that the government could solve the crisis of teachers by arranging a special BCS or recruiting increased number of teachers through normal BCS.
“Special BCS can be a fruitful remedy for the shortage of teachers at government colleges,” she said.
