Some 4,546 Bangladeshis are now jails abroad on charges of various crimes, Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister told Parliament on Monday, reports UNB.
These Bangladeshis are now confined in jails of 23 countries of the world, Engr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, responding to a starred question of Begum Sultana Bulbul (Women Seat-34).
He said officials of Bangladesh missions through the labour wing have been assisting the detained Bangladeshi workers and citizens for their release.
The concerned missions also provided legal assistance to the detained workers by appointing lawyers, the Minister said.
Besides, he said, the officials of the concerned missions visited the jail to talk to the detained Bangladeshi workers to solve their problems. The concerned missions sent back the workers to Bangladesh after completion of their punishment period.
The highest 1,255 Bangladeshis are detained in Saudi Arabia (844 in Riyadh and 411 in Jeddah) while 627 in Dubai and North Arab Emirates, the Minister said.
Meanwhile, a total of 143 Bangladeshis are in jail in Oman, 556 in Malaysia (jail) and 534 in Malaysian camp, 683 in Abu Dhabi, 4 in Brunei, 38 in Hong Kong, 26 in Iran, 12 in Nepal, 90 in Singapore, 23 in Qatar, 35 in Greece, 15 in Egypt, 272 in Kuwait, 4 in South Korea, 79 in Italy, 88 in Iraq, 52 in Maldives, 5 in Turkey, 2 in Azerbaijan and 3 in Georgian jails.
