The BNP-led opposition alliance enforces a general strike for 48 hours, amidst the current blockade of roads, railway and waterways, across the country beginning this morning, 24 hours before the national polls scheduled for tomorrow. The BNP chairperson’s adviser Osman Faruque announced the programme at a press conference in the capital on Friday evening in protest at
the BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, being confined to her house and against the national elections.
The opposition alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has boycotted the polls.
Blockade violence, meanwhile, scaled up across the country on the third day of the blockade, which began on January 1, two days before the elections, leaving at least two dead.
Arson attack, vandalism and explosion of crude bombs were reported from different parts of the country.
The BNP-led opposition alliance is enforcing the blockade to thwart the national elections scheduled for Sunday. The alliance earlier enforced blockade for 501 hours in 22 days in five spells beginning on November 26 when the polls schedule was announced.
Local units of the opposition alliance earlier announced general strike in at least 17 districts beginning this morning.
The districts include Chittagong, Khagrachari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Rajshahi, Jaipurhat, Sirajganj, Patuakhali, Khulna, Sylhet, Bogra, Noakhali, Comilla, Bagerhat, Rangpur and Thakurgaon.
