A five-storey under-construction building has started to tilt in the city’s Kamrangirchar area, spreading panic among the locals.
Shafiqul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kamrangirchar Police Station told The New Nation yesterday that on information, police rushed to the spot at about 8 am and evacuated the family members of Omar Faruk, the owner of the building. The OC said the building started to subside after some cracks had developed in the rear of the building two days back.
Omar Faruk along with his family was residing on the first floor of the building, said the police officer.
A local resident, Rafiq, told this reporter that they heard a loud vibrate, and rushed to the streets fearing the worst.
Ramiz Uddin, another resident of the locality said that the building was constructed over 2.5 kathas by filling up a water body. He said the building began to tilt despite its six-storey foundation when the fifth floor was being constructed.
The building was initially a two-storey one where the owner lived. Recently, the owner decided to resume construction and finish the other floors.
