STUDIO THEATRE FESTIVAL
Class struggle highlighted in theatre
The audience was immensely pleased with the simplicity and liveliness of the popular play Kinu Kahar Thetar staged by the artistes of Pracchyanaut on Tuesday. The play has been authored by noted theatre personality of West Bengal Manoj Mitra,
The play was staged on the fifth day of the studio theatre festival
organised by Northern University based troupe Northern Theatre.
Directed by Kazi Taufiqul Islam Emon, the play ridicules the ruling class through depiction of a small rural theatre group, who presents a play about a man named Ghontakarno who is hired by the minister of the area to confess a crime committed by him (the minister) and endure the punishment in exchange of a handsome sum of money.
Realistic portrayal of simple village theatre folks touched the hearts of the urban audience. The play is packed with humorous dialogues and comical scenes. The crude accent of the artistes made the viewers laugh. The set design of the play was convincing in creating an atmosphere of a village theatre.
A group of musicians with instruments like dhol and harmonium sat at one corner of the stage and kept the audience entertained with music punched into the play.
The play is not just another comedy production for it carries a strong message revealing the selfishness of the ruling class and the consequent sufferings of the commoners.
‘It was a challenge to direct renowned Manoj Mitra’s play to begin with. Kinu Kahar Thetar has been presented by different troupes both in Bangladesh and in India so theatre lovers might be naturally drawing comparisons and be critical about it ,’ Emon shared with New Age.
‘The production was entertaining overall, it had several elements that made me laugh,’ observed Asif Hossain Anik, a private university student who watched the play.
