HIGHWAY EXTORTION BY POLICE
FBCCI VP resigns from 2 bodies on price monitoring
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry vice-president Md Helal Uddin on Saturday resigned from two separate price monitoring committees of the FBCCI and commerce ministry in protest at ‘extortion’ by the police from goods-laden trucks on the highways.
In a letter to FBCCI president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, he alleged that the initiatives that the government and the trade body took for controlling price hike of essential commodities could not be implemented properly because of extortion on the highways by some unscrupulous members of the law enforcing agencies.
Helal has been performing as the convener of price monitoring committee of the FBCCI and a member of price monitoring committee of the commerce ministry.
‘The FBCCI has requested the home ministry and police authorities in several times to address the issue of extortion from goods-laden vehicles but the extortion by individuals, various organisations and the police is not decreasing,’ he said in the letter.
‘In this context, I feel very helpless and failed as the convener of FBCCI committee as well as vice-president of the apex trade body of the country. So, I have decided to resign from the posts,’ he said.
He also sent the copy of his decision to an additional secretary of the commerce ministry.
