Mohakal Theatre Festival
Tagore phase ends today
The Tagore retrospective of the ongoing theatre festival organised by Mohakal Natya Sampraday will end today with the staging of two plays based on his works. A contemporary play will also be staged on the ninth day festival today.
The 13-day festival titled Biswanatoker Yuth Utsab features world classics and contemporary plays.
Theatre troupe Natyajon will stage Tagore’s Shesh Rokkha at the National Theatre Hall, and Subachan Natya Sangsad will stage Mohajoner Nao at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; and the theatre troupe Natyadhara will stage Tagore’s Rather Roshi at the Chhayanaut Auditorium.
Mohsina Akter has directed Shesh Rokkha for Natyajon. The comic play depicts two friends who want to fortify their friendship through arranging the marriage of their children. However, the story takes a hilarious turn when the daughter and the son of the two friends decide to marry of their own choices and not of their fathers’ decision.
Rather Roshi, directed by Ashish Khondker, is about Rath Yatra, a ritual festival of the Hindus. It speaks against the so-called caste-system of the Hindu society and preaches the significance of a class-free society through the portrayal of a royal carriage which gets jammed without any apparent reason. When all the royal engineers and soldiers fail to mobilise the carriage, a low-class peasant successfully makes it move again.
Mohajoner Nao, the 33rd production of Subachan Natya Sangsad, written by Shakur Majid and directed by Sudip Chakrobarty, features a biography of the baul devotee Shah Abdul Karim. The play narrates the story of Shah Abdul Karim and his journey to the realm of music through different sequences based on his real life happenings. Highlighting the life of Baul Shamrat, the performers will sing about 20 songs of Abdul Karim during the play which will focus the many difficulties faced by Abdul Karim.
