At least seven people, including a father and his son, were killed and 20 others injured in post-election violence across the country, reports UNB.
Five supporters of the Jatiya Party (JP) winning candidate from Dhaka-1 constituency Salma Islam were killed in a clash with supporters of Awami League candidate Advocate Abdul Mannan, who also was a former state minister, at Hazarbigha village in Dohar at 9am on Monday. JP candidate adv Salma Islam defeated her rival Awami League candidate Abdul Mannan Khan in the constituency in the 10th parliamentary elections held on Sunday.
Kamrul Islam Miah, officer-in-charge of Dohar Police Station, said a clash broke out between Awami League-backed Ali Chakdar group and Jatiya party-supported Alauddin Mollah group around 9:30 am over the polls results, leaving three JP supporters—Musa, Masud and Makbul — dead on the spot and 20 others injured.
The victims Mosharraf Khandoker, 60, his son Masud Khandoker, 25, Maqbul Hossen, 35, and Aslam, 20 died on the spot. Another injured Shajahan Khandakar,56, succumbed to injuries at Mitford Hospital. Members of police, army and BGB have been deployed in the area.
Meanwhile, a Juba league activist Mahfuz Alam, 23, son of Jainal Hossain of Jaggathjibonpur village succumbed to injuries yesterday morning after being injured in a clash with BNP-Jamaat supporters.
The clash broke out when the ruling party supporters brought out a victory procession at Shibpur bazaar under Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali during 8.30 pm on Sunday, said the district police super Anisur Rahman.
In Dinajpur, a teenage boy, who sustained injuries in a clash between Awami League and 18-party alliance activists in Sahadubi village under Birganj upazila of the district a couple of hours after the voting ended on Sunday, succumbed to injuries at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The Deceased was identified as Asaduzzaman, 15, son of Alim Uddin of Shibrampur area. Family members claimed Asaduzzaman was a supporter of Shibir. With this death, the total death toll in poll-related violence in Dinajpur now stands at 5.
In Jessore, unruly jamaat-shibir activists attacked a village of hindu minorities and vandalized approximately 150 households of the hindu communities at Malopara under Avoynagar in the district on Monday. Several thousands hindu families have already left the village fearing attacks, media report said.
Incidents of violence also took place at Magura, Mymensingh, Morelganj in Bagerhat, Habigonj and Mithapukur union in Rangpur.
The opposition alliance’s fresh hartal call came hours after the closure of voting for the 10th national election that saw low voter turnout and massive violence, leaving 19 people dead across the country.
Another person, whose identity could not be immediately confirmed, was killed and 23 others were injured when miscreants set a vehicle on fire at Lemua bridge area in Feni on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
BSS adds: Country-wide 48-hours hartal along with blockade for indefinite period enforced by the 18-party alliance led by BNP
is passing amid demonstrations and stray incidents of vandalism and arson at different places across the country on Monday. Simultaneously, the fresh 48-hours hartal demanding cancellation of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad election and holding the general election under the non-party caretaker government was observed in the capital peacefully with no reports of violent incident.
The shutdown will end at 6:00am on Wednesday. BNP chairperson’s adviser Dr Osman Faruque announced the fresh action programme at a press conference at his Gulshan residence on Sunday afternoon.
During the hartal, presence of vehicles on the city streets was relatively thin while law enforcers took position at different strategic points to fend off any trouble. Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws dominated the streets in the morning. However, no long-route bus left Mohakhali, Sayedabad and Gabtoli terminals since morning fearing vandalism.
Stray incidents of clashes were also reported in Pirojpur, Chandpur, Rangpur, and Barisal. Violence also took place in Magura, Mymensingh, Morelganj in Bagerhat, Habiganj.
