At least eight people, including four garment workers, were killed and 20 others injured in two separate road accidents in Sirajganj and Narayanganj on Monday, the second day of 84-hour general strike called by the BNP-led alliance. In Sirajganj, four people were killed when a truck laden with drinking water bottles lost control and skidded off the road near Barogodza Bridge under Salanga police station in Ullapara upazila.
Salanga police officer-in-charge M Rashedul Islam Biswas confirmed the accident, saying that all the victims were the residents of Khulna.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Babul Fakir, 30, son of Jamsher Ali, Nizam Uddin, 35, son of Nazrul Islam, Mohshin Ali, 36, son of Abul Kalam and Monir Hossain, 32, of Shiromoni Madhyapara village under Khan Jahan Ali police station in Khulna.
New Age correspondent in Sirajganj said that police recovered the bodies and handed over them to their relatives. Police seized the truck, but its helper went into hiding soon after the accident.
In Narayanganj, four apparel workers were killed and 20 others injured when a factory bus carrying the workers from Jatrabari of Dhaka collided with a truck in Sarulia area under Siddhirganj police station.
The deceased were identified as Helena Akter, 25, Shahinur Begum, 25, Ayesha Begum, 27, and Munna Mia, 27, workers of Fashion City Ltd, a garment factory located in Adamjee Export Processing Zone.
Siddhirganj police officer-in-charge Abdul Matin said that the accident occurred around 7:45am.
