At least nine people, including three of a family, were killed and five others went missing as a microbus fell into a roadside canal in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur on Sunday afternoon.
Eight of the deceased were Joynal Abedin, 42, his wife Nasima Begum, 35, and sister Taslima Begum, 26, Harun-or-Rashid, 40, Hafez Ahmed, 45, Rakib, 12, Tamanna Begum, 24, and
Rahima Begum,30. The identity of the other deceased could not be known yet.
Three people were also injured after the microbus carrying 17 passengers skidded off the road and fell into the water body at Katakhali at about 3:30pm.
Locals retrieved the nine bodies from the sunken vehicle and rescued three alive while five others remained missing till filing of this report at 8:00pm.
Witnesses the victims were returning from Narkeltola in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur to Noagaon Purbopara after attending a post-wedding party when the tragedy struck them.
The sunken microbus could not be salvaged as of 8:00pm.
Additional deputy commissioner of Lakshmipur Mostafa Kamal said divers had been called in from Chandpur to salvage the vehicle.
