Seven women entrepreneurs and two journalists were presented with the BWCCI-Green Delta Insurance Progressive Award-2012 at a programme in the city on Saturday.
Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with Green Delta Insurance Company organised the function at the Diploma Engineers Institute.
The winning entrepreneurs are Bulbul Chowdhury (Barisal Division), Afreen Faruque (Dhaka), Khadiza Rasul (Khulna), Farida Begum (Rangpur), Monira Moti Jonaki (Rajshahi), Nurun Nahar Baby (Sylhet) and Monwara Begum (Chittagong).
While Farah Tanjee, a business reporter of Somoy TV, won the award for the electronic media and Abu Sazzad, a staff reporter of The Independent, won the award for the print media.
Industries minister Dilip Barua distributed the awards among the winners who each received a cheque for Tk 10,000 along with a crest and a certificate.
Since 2011, BWCCI has been giving away the award to women entrepreneurs in recognition of their successes, and to the media representatives for their contribution towards the development of women entrepreneurship in the country.
Speaking at the programme, Barua stressed the need for creating women entrepreneurs and promoting them, saying that employment generation and people’s purchasing capacity would increase with the rise in the number of women entrepreneurs.
The government wants to provide more loans to the women entrepreneurs through the Small and Medium Enterprise Foundation so that they could bring out new products and create markets for those, he added.
BWCCI founder president Selima Ahmad, incumbent president Sangita Ahmed, senior vice-president Mun Mun Rahman, and founding managing director of Green Delta Insurance Company Nasir A Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
