The Citycell Bangladesh League resumes today (Tuesday) after a day’s break at the new venue Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Stadium at Kalamalur.
All the 13 participating clubs agreed to play the Citycell Bangladesh League at the Kamalapur stadium in the best interest of football. The decision was made at a meeting of the clubs with the Bangladesh Football Federation on Monday.
The representatives of the professional league clubs responded to the call by the BFF to continue the league rather than stopping it as the Bangabandhu National Stadium was taken over by the Bangladesh Olympic Association for the preparation of the upcoming SA Games.
Abdus Salam Murshedi, senior vice-president and chairman of Bangladesh League committee, said he feels relieved after getting positive response from the clubs. ‘We are thankful to them, in the greater interest of the game the clubs agreed to play in the changed situation. Bangladesh League will resume on Tuesday,’ said Salam.
However, Salam said the BFF will look into the ticket sales and will consider paying compensation if required for the greater benefit of the clubs. He also added that the sponsors Citycell will get all possible coverage at the venue and the branding will continue.
The BFF officials expressed satisfaction over the pitch of the Kamalapur stadium. ‘The pitch is 115 yards long and 75 yards wide, it is the ideal measurement of a football field, though there are some rough patches on the pitch we will try to improve the condition, all I can say is that the stadium is ready to hold the matches,’ said Al Musabbir Sadi, general secretary of the BFF.
He also added that the Army stadium is also in the list as a back-up venue and will be used if required.
Satyajit Das Rupu, manager of defending champions Dhaka Abahani, said, ‘There is no option of stopping the league, the clubs responded to BFF’s call in the greater interest of football, it will be a new challenge for all as the condition is new to them.’
He, however, asked the federation to ensure proper security in the venue during the matches.
