Our Correspondent, Tangail
Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain yesterday said cracks in the Jamuna Bridge will cause no problem to the bridge and its longevity but wants to rename the bridge after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Panic related to the cracks spread without any reason and there is no problem in trains and heavy vehicles using the bridge, he said.
The communication minister told these to reporters after visiting Jamuna Bridge in Tangail yesterday.
He said the government will take necessary steps to repair the cracks as soon as possible after reviewing the specialists’ report on why the cracks developed in the first place.
He said the bridge is known to the people as Bangabandhu Bridge even though it is Jamuna Bridge on paper. It will be renamed after Bangabandhu, he added.
He hoped that around Tk 4,000 crore will be collected as toll from the bridge users in 25 years.
Secretary to the Communication Ministry AQA Mostak Ahmed, Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Maksudur Rahman Patwari and other high officials accompanied the minister during his visit.
