Pro-Awami League (AL) teachers of Rajshahi University are lobbing with government high-ups for appointment as vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor of the university.
The lobbing increased after the education ministry recently got a list of pro-AL teachers who performed active roles during AL’s ‘crises period’.
Seeking anonymity, an aspirant said education ministry contacted members of Progressive Teachers Society (PTS), a pro-AL teachers’ body, and asked for a list of teachers who played active role when AL chief Sheikh Hasina and some RU teachers were in jail.
The PTS then held a steering committee meeting on January 11 and made a list as per desire of the ministry, he said.
A steering committee member said, besides their political identity and role during hard days, academic carrier and performance in other fields were also considered in preparing the list.
The list contains names of former RU VC Prof Dr Saidur Rahman Khan, PTS convener Prof Dr Mozaffar Hossain, RU Syndicate member and former PTS convener Prof Abdus Sobhan, former PTS convener Prof Muhammad Nurullah, RU Senate member Prof Anando Kumar Saha, Prof Shah Nowaz Ali and Prof Sarwar Zahan Sajal.
Sources said lobbying is also going on for administrative posts.
On the other hand many teachers who are also members of PTS while talking to this correspondent said appointment in key posts on political consideration will destroy academic atmosphere on the campus.
They urged the government to appoint a competent, skilled and experienced person as a vice-chancellor of the university.
