The Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium wore a festive look on Friday afternoon, as more than 20 thousand garment workers thronged there with colourful dresses to attend the first-ever Workers’ Fair.
Chittagong city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury inaugurated the fair organised by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association to give some recreation for the workers.
Renowned folk singer Mamataj and Close Up star Atique rendered songs at the function when the garment workers also performed dances and songs when the BGMEA provided 50 colour television sets to the workers through raffle draw.
Speaking on the occasion, the city mayor said the workers were the life of any factory and better production was not possible without a proper coordination between the workers and the owners.
‘The garment sector has become the life of the country’s economy due to the hard labour of the workers,’ he said adding that the garment owners needed to be careful regarding the rights of the workers.
BGMEA president Anwar Ul Alam Chowdhury, said they were trying to enhance the relationship between the garment owners and workers and the fair was an impression of their efforts in this regard.
‘The garment sector can change the economic situation of the country and a good relation between the owners and workers is a must in this regard,’ he said adding that they would try to organise such programme each year.
The workers attending the function expressed their satisfaction over the initiative of the BGMEA and said such initiative would play a significant role in strengthening relationship between the workers and the owners.
‘We have a little chance of amusement and we could not even think that the BGMEA will organise such a mega function for us,’ Malati Rani, a garment worker who attended the programme from the Bandartila area in the city, said.
