The International Day For Disaster Reduction-2010 was observed in the country yesterday with a call to stop man-made pollution.
Marking the day, two environmental organizations — Centre For Disaster And Vulnerability Studies (CDVS) and Green Belt Trust (GBT) and department of Geology of Dhaka University — arranged a sit-in programme at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on DU campus.
Environmental activists at the programme urged the government to raise awareness among people against negative impact of human-created pollution on the environment.
They also demanded proper early preparations to face natural disasters and curb risk of natural disasters.
They also called upon the people to be conscious towards the negative impact of de-forestation, environment pollution, chemical pollution and other sorts of pollution on the environment.
Dr Khondokar Mokaddem Hosen, Director of CDVS, said disasters occur for two causes — one is natural and another is man-made adding man-made causes are mainly responsible for the recent natural disasters.
Mentioning Bangladesh as a disaster-prone country and a victim of environmental pollutions Prof Kamrul Hasan demanded proper implementation of the environmental law.
