Reveals study
The number of women joining the profession of journalism is increasing notably though they face some barriers like stalking and harassment at places of work, says a research on the state of women in journalism.
Female journalists face problems in getting maternity leave and assignments, according to their skill and merit, but their role in this sector cannot be neglected, the study adds.
The research titled “The state of women in journalism: A pilot effort of Dhaka based media” was conducted by Journalism Training and Research Initiative (JATRI).
The findings were revealed at a meeting arranged in JATRI’s conference hall in the city yesterday.
The study was based on opinions of 100 female and 25 male journalists, working in different news media, says a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, former adviser to a caretaker government and Editor of the Daily Independent Mahbubul Alam said anyone devoted, whether male or female, can do well in journalism, as the major requirements are skill and talent.
e also stressed on equal chance for males and females and the need for working together, for the development of the profession.
Mahbubul also stressed on the need to ensure training of the journalists to enhance their ability to write reports, whether investigative, on the stock market or on real-estate business.
Among others, journalist Joglul Ahmed Chowdhury, upcoming Bangla newspaper The Daily Adhinayak’s Editor Mojammel Hossain Monju, Feature Editor of Prothom Alo Shumona Sharmin and Assistant Prof of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University S M Shamim Reja spoke on the occasion.
