The Bangladesh Tourism Board signed an agreement with the ICC Development Limited on Wednesday to become the local partner for the Bangladesh part of the World Cup 2011.
The deal, worth around Tk 5 crore, will allow the newly-formed tourism board to showcase Bangladesh to the world during the eight matches to be held in the country.
Campbell Jamieson, the ICC general manager (commercial), and Sardar Abul Kalam, a joint secretary of the civil aviation and tourism ministry, signed the deal on behalf of their respective organisations at a city hotel.
‘It is a great day for our relationship and partnership. I hope to work with the tourism board closely to make the event an outstanding success,’ said Campbell after signing the agreement.
As a local partner, the tourism board will have the right to show ‘the beautiful Bangladesh’ theme in all ICC broadcasting and in all the products sponsored by the ICC.
The officials of the
tourism board unveiled a plan to project the tourist sites, culture and products of Bangladesh to the world during the event.
The ICC’s official broadcasters Star Sports and ESPN will also air television commercials on tourism in Bangladesh, the tourism board said.
The board will also create a presentation on the country for foreign journalists. It has planned a tour to Sundarban. The board will also set up information booth and brand the airport and hotels to help the tourists.
AHM Mustafa Kamal, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, said they have more plans to promote Bangladesh’s tourism through cricket in future.
‘I think Bangladesh is a very attractive country and cricket provides us the best opportunity to show it to the world,’ Kamal said.
Civil aviation secretary Shafiq Alam Mehedi and World Cup 2011 central organising committee convener Mahbubul Anam also spoke on the occasion.
