At least 10 people were killed and about 40 injured in a head-on-collision between two 52-seat buses on the Dhaka–Tangail Highway at Kabirpur of Ashulia in Dhaka on Sunday evening.
The police said the death figure could rise.
A bus of Meem-Ovi Paribahan headed for Pabna collided with a bus of Borak Paribahan headed for Dhaka about 6:30pm. Six died on the spot and 40 were injured, Ashulia police subinspector Abid Hossain told New Age.
The Ashulia police officer-in-charge, Sirajul Islam, confirmed the death of six passengers — four of the Borak Paribahan bus and two of the Meem-Ovi Paribahan bus.
Four died later in Korea Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, a police officer said. The police officer-in-charge said the death figure could be rising.
Six of the deceased could be identified till 10:00pm. They were apparel factory executive Fazlur Rahman, 30, Golam Rabbani, 25, and Milon, 20, who were brothers and residents of Kaliakair, Anna Begum, 45, Rahin Sharif, 35, and Rafiqul Islam, 26, of Tangail, the police said quoting witnesses.
The injured were admitted to Korea Bangladesh Friendship Hospital but, according to witness accounts, physicians and nurses were yet to join work at the hospital after Eid holidays.
Bdnews24.com said although a few nurses were present, no physician could be seen in the hospital.
The hospital’s medical assistant Moazzem Hossain said, ‘It is difficult for me to manage everything as physicians are yet to join work after Eid.’
The accident created a traffic tailback on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. Rescue operation was on till 10:00pm.
