Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela, a 22-day fair marking Victory Day, began at the Outer Stadium in the Chittagong city with the slogan ‘Muktijuddher Bijoy Bir Bangaleer Ahanker’ on Friday.
The state minister for liberation war affairs, AB Tajul Islam, inaugurated the fair by lighting the victory flame at MA Aziz Stadium Gate as chief guest at about 5:30pm.
The state minister, while addressing the inaugural session of liberation war reminiscence on the Gymnasium premises, said no power would be able to resist the ongoing trial process of the war criminals.
‘The people of the country are united to hold the trial of war criminals,’ he said, adding that the young generation was now more curious to know the real history of the liberation war.
With former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, also president of Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela Parishad, in the chair, Emdad Hossain, secretary general of the central council of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, lawmaker MA Latif, general secretary of the Parishad Badiul Alam, adviser Ishaque Mia and Awami League leader AZM Nasir Uddin also addressed the session among others.
Reminiscence of the liberation war and cultural functions will be held on the gymnasium premises till the end of the fair, which has been organised in the city every year since 1989 on December 25.
Meanwhile, a 21-day victory fair, Sammilita Muktijuddher Bijoy Mela, began at the Laldighi Maidan in the afternoon.
Major (retd) Rafiqul Islam Beer Uttam, a former minister, inaugurated the fair upholding the national flag and releasing pigeons at 5:00pm when the fair committee chairman Nurul Islam MP, chairman of Chittagong Development Authority Abdus Salam and fair committee general secretary Mohammed Idris were present.
